Why braces?

We know it’s a word many teens dread to hear, but modern braces have come a long way in recent years. It’s no wonder so many Australian adults are now choosing braces to correct orthodontic problems they didn’t fix when they were younger.

Modern braces are smaller, more comfortable and more subtle than the bulky ‘train track’ smiles of the past, so they won’t affect your lifestyle or appearance as much. If you choose ‘invisible’ braces such as ceramic braces or lingual braces, people might not even notice you’re wearing them.

Who can get braces?

Braces are most associated with young teenagers, but many older teens and adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment too. If you want to straighten crooked teeth, correct your bite or close gaps, make an appointment at Hello Ortho and we’ll tell you about all the options.

Braces for kids

Some orthodontic problems are best treated in childhood. Early orthodontics can begin as early as age 7 to help guide children’s teeth and jaws into a better position and help kids to break habits like thumb sucking. Early treatment can sometimes mean kids won’t need braces when they’re older.

Adolescent braces

Braces have the best chance of success when all of your adult teeth have come through and your jaws are still growing. This is usually between the ages of 10 and 14, but this depends on the individual.

Adult braces

Thanks to advances in clear and invisible braces and shorter treatment times, more adults are now choosing braces to straighten their smiles, which can help them to feel more confident in their careers and social lives. In fact, over 40% of our patients at Hello Ortho are adults.

3M Braces

The benefits and options provided by 3M Braces are limitless. Perfect for teens, these braces offer the latest in American orthodontic innovation. Depending on the recommended treatment and requirement, HelloOrtho can help you choose from removable clear aligners, translucent ceramic clear braces for a natural look, metal braces for less visibility and more comfort or invisible braces.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are comparable to metal braces, however instead of grey or metallic silver brackets and wires, they use clear or tooth-colored brackets, making them less/hardly noticeable.

So, if you’re thinking about getting braces but don’t want to feel self-conscious about wearing them, ceramic braces can be of tremendous help and they come with a list of benefits too. Not only are they harder to see but ceramic braces also help move teeth faster than clear aligners and in terms of options, they come in a range of colours.

Damon Braces

Damon System braces are self-ligating teeth braces that are an alternative to the various forms of invisible and standard teen and adult braces available today.

Self-ligating braces use specific clips, or little metal doors, to keep the archwires in place and they help straighten teeth using a sliding mechanism. Unlike traditional braces, this technique does not require the use of rubber bands.

Damon braces make therapy easier and less uncomfortable and using them saves you the hassle of any additional braces preparation such as tooth extraction.

Ceramic braces

Sometimes called clear braces, Ceramic braces are a good choice if you don't want your braces to be so visible. They can be just as effective as metal braces in most cases, though treatment may take a little longer.

Lingual braces

Also called invisible braces, because they're attached behind the teeth and can't be easily seen, lingual braces are another popular choice if you don't want to draw attention to your orthodontic treatment.

Damon™ braces

Damon braces are self-ligating, meaning they don't need elastic ties. This can make them faster, more comfortable and more hygienic than traditional braces, taking up to 6 months off the standard treatment time. We offer Damon braces with metal or ceramic brackets, depending on your needs.

Expansion appliance

Palate expanders may be recommended for younger children from about age 7 who have a narrow upper jaw. This appliance is attached to the roof of the mouth, where it encourages the upper jaw to expand. This can create space to align overcrowding and assist bite correction.

Dentofacial orthopaedic appliance

These appliances can help to treat overbite, protruding front teeth and other complex orthodontic problems while the jaws are still growing. Types of dentofacial orthopaedic appliances we use at Hello Ortho include Inman aligners, Herbst appliances and Twin Block appliances.

Braces Frequently Asked Questions

When you come in for a consultation with our Orthodontist in Caulfield, we’ll give you or your child an orthodontic assessment and recommend the types of braces we think you could benefit from. We’ll make sure you have all the information you need about what each treatment involves and what the braces cost so you can make a fully informed decision.

If you decide to go ahead with the treatment, we’ll arrange a follow-up appointment to  fit your braces.

Braces can feel a bit sore or uncomfortable for the first 3-5 days after they’re attached, until your mouth gets used to how they feel. You can take over-the-counter pain relief to help reduce discomfort during this time.

We’ll give you some orthodontic wax you can apply to the braces if you feel the brackets and wires rubbing against your lips or cheeks. We also recommend eating softer foods while your teeth are adjusting to your new braces.

Some foods can damage braces or make them come loose. If this happens, your treatment could take longer to finish.

For the best results, we recommend that you avoid hard and sticky foods such as chewing gum, nuts, popcorn and sticky lollies until your braces are taken off. You also shouldn’t crunch ice or chew your fingernails or pens.

The time your orthodontic treatment takes depends on how much your teeth need to be straightened and the type of braces you have.

Metal braces usually take between 18 and 24 months, . We’ll give you an estimate of your treatment time so you know what to expect.

We’ll schedule regular appointments for you to see your orthodontist so we can check your progress, adjust your braces and help with any problems you or your child may be having. We normally arrange appointments every 4 to 8 weeks, but this depends on your individual needs.

Yes. Wearing a retainer is an important part of any orthodontic treatment, as it helps to keep your teeth in their new position. Without it, they can lapse back towards their old position.

There’s no set price for braces, as this depends on the type of braces you have and how complex your orthodontic issue is. Metal braces are the most affordable braces.

We can give you an estimated quote for your braces via email, but we need to complete an orthodontic assessment in person before we can give you a more accurate idea of your braces cost. We’ll also tell you about our interest-free payment plans that could help to make your braces more affordable.
