What You Need to Consider Before Getting Braces

If you’re visiting our website here at Hello Ortho, you’re probably looking at gaining a better smile for yourself or a family member and must be considering braces. Braces remain one of the most effective ways to straighten teeth and bolster long-term oral health!

We know it’s a word many people dread to hear, but modern braces have come a long way in recent years. It’s no wonder so many people in Australia are now choosing braces to correct orthodontic problems they didn’t fix when they were younger.

Modern braces are smaller, more comfortable and more subtle than the bulky ‘train track’ smiles of the past, so they won’t affect your lifestyle or appearance as much. If you choose ‘invisible’ braces such as ceramic braces or lingual braces, people might not even notice you’re wearing them. In todays’ times, getting braces for kids, braces for teens and braces for adults is a much easier process than you would expect.

While children, teens, and adults see braces as a step to a more confident smile, many aren’t sure what to expect from orthodontic treatment. Our team at Hello Ortho know that you want options and has you covered! We will equip you with the complete knowledge of the best treatment options to help you make an informed decision for yourself or your family.

Due to the recent developments in orthodontic practices, different corrective solutions are now available. This wider range of treatment options has made orthodontics more accessible. There are several different braces types that your Hello Ortho Orthodontist will advise on, and some of these are –

Damon™ braces

Damon braces are self-ligating, meaning they don’t need elastic ties. This can make them faster, more comfortable and more hygienic than traditional braces, taking up to 6 months off the standard treatment time. We offer Damon braces with metal or ceramic brackets, depending on your needs.

Sometimes called clear braces, Ceramic braces are a good choice if you don’t want your braces to be visible. They can be just as effective as metal braces in most cases, though treatment may take a little longer.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are attached behind the teeth and are another popular choice if you don’t want to draw attention to your braces.

Invisalign hello ortho caulfield

Invisalign® treatment is orthodontics without conventional braces. Instead of attaching brackets and wires to your teeth, we’ll create a series of clear aligners that fit snugly over your teeth. These are designed to be almost invisible to the naked eye, so you won’t have to worry about your appearance.

If you need orthodontic treatment but don’t like the way braces look and feel, Invisalign® treatment could be the answer. Under the guidance of our specialist orthodontists, Invisalign® can be just as effective as braces for straightening teeth and correcting other common issues.

Let’s now look at some of the most commonly asked questions for those considering braces!

What to expect when getting braces for the first time?

Our patients often ponder a common question: what is it like to get braces put on? At Hello Ortho, we recognise that getting your braces on is a big deal and you may have some apprehensions about the process. Whether you’re super excited or a little nervous, our expert team at Hello Ortho Caulfield Orthodontics will have you covered from the moment you walk in the door!

Your expert orthodontist at Hello Ortho Caulfield will begin by thoroughly cleaning and drying your teeth. If you are getting traditional metal braces or ceramic braces, they will then secure the metal brackets to each tooth using special bonding glue, which is safe and pain-free. Next, they will slide metal bands around your back molars to secure the brackets before affixing the archwires with small rubber bands known as ligatures.

A similar process is followed for lingual braces. However, the brackets and wire are placed on the inside of your teeth instead of the outside.

Once your braces are fitted, you’ll need to make small changes in your lifestyle to make sure your treatment runs smoothly, and if you encounter any issues or have questions, give the team at Hello Ortho a call, and we will be happy to assist you!

Do they whiten teeth after braces?

This is a common question (and concern!) from our patients. Your orthodontist will usually recommend whitening your teeth after getting braces rather than before because some patients notice uneven tooth colour when their braces are removed (which is normal and safe)! The lighter colour results from the brackets protecting the enamel from exposure to all the food and drink consumed during the treatment.

Will my teeth be yellow after braces?

The last thing you want is yellow teeth after years of wearing braces and taking care of them.

But unfortunately, it is a common occurrence for many!

If you don’t take care of your teeth whilst you’re wearing braces, you might be surprised to see white squares on yellow-stained teeth after your braces are removed.

Thankfully, it’s easy to avoid this experience. You can follow these tips-

1) Brush your teeth with a toothbrush made for braces

2) Floss every day to reach those ‘hard to reach’ spots

3) Avoid teeth-staining foods such as coffee, tea, cola drinks, beetroot, etc

4) Avoid smoking!

Seek advice from your orthodontist, and ask if Invisalign would be a good option for you instead of metal braces. You could also choose Lingual braces or Ceramic braces – ask your Hello ortho expert for more advice.

Is it painful to have braces removed?

Although most people do not experience pain when getting their braces removed, a few can experience a bit of soreness post-removal. This happens due to the relief of pressure from your teeth; your teeth may become sensitive as nothing is holding them together. If you have any concerns before braces removal, talk to our team.

Do braces move your teeth every day?

The short answer to the question is YES!

Due to the speed of teeth shifting, braces must be worn for significant and often unfavourable lengths of time. Our team does understand that this can be inconvenient at times, and we want to remind you of the results that await you!

Practising extensive dental hygiene habits and keeping orthodontist appointments timely will safeguard the treatment plan from unwanted delay.

If you have any concerns, our team is here to support you every step of the way!
